2021 Margan Breaking Ground Albarino

2021 Margan Breaking Ground Albarino

100% Albarino

Hunter Valley, New South Wales

It seemed like the acidity of the Alby this year was never going to soften below verjuice level, but patience prevailed. Four-ish days on skins until indigenous fermentation kicked off. Pressed to ‘Cleopatra’, our Nico Velo truncated concrete tank. Rack and returned; rested on fine lees for four months. The concrete really enhanced the tension in the wine by tightening up the dry extracts derived from the period on skins. Unfined/unfiltered. - Ollie Margan, Winemaker

"Ollie Margan does Breaking Ground and gets to push boundaries with the family farm fruit. Here, natural ferment with four days on skins for the albarino, and ferment in concrete tank too. Unfined/unfiltered. This is a more adventurous and successful step with this variety at Margan.Great, textural white. Length, tension, powdery mouth-feel and general electricity. Perfume is green herbs, nashi pear and sandalwood. Flavours nashi pear, lime juice and an intangible feel of mixed, liquid minerals coursing over the tongue. Holds shape beautifully, finishes with verjuice like acidity and a lick of spice. Understated, subtle but a serious white, pent up, intriguing and delicious. And I bet great over ten to fifteen years." - 94 Points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
